Making the Most of Your NDIS Plan Review

Your Guide to Getting What You Need

Your NDIS plan review is coming up, and you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. This is your chance to show how your current supports are working and what you need going forward. Here's how to prepare and make your voice heard.

Start Preparing Early

Don't wait until the week before your review. Begin collecting evidence about three months ahead:

  • Keep a simple diary of your daily activities and any challenges you face
  • Take photos or videos of you using your supports (like mobility aids or therapy equipment)
  • Ask family, friends, or support workers to write brief notes about how your supports help you
  • Collect reports from your therapists, doctors, or other professionals

Know What's Working (And What Isn't)

Be ready to talk about both successes and gaps in your current plan:

What's helping you? Maybe your physiotherapy sessions have improved your mobility, or your support worker has helped you become more independent with cooking.

What's not working? Perhaps you need more hours of personal care, or your current therapy isn't the right fit. Be specific about why - "I need more support with personal care because I'm taking longer to get ready in the mornings and it's making me late for work."

Speak Up About Your Goals

Your NDIS plan should reflect what matters most to you. Think about:

  • What do you want to achieve in the next 12 months?
  • How do your supports help you work toward these goals?
  • What new supports might help you take the next step?

Your goals might be about work, relationships, living independently, or participating in your community. There's no "right" goal - only what's right for you.

Don't Go Alone

Consider bringing someone to support you:

  • A family member or friend who knows your situation well
  • A support coordinator or advocate
  • Someone from a disability organization

They can help you remember important points and speak up if you feel overwhelmed.

After Your Review Meeting

Once your new plan arrives, read it carefully. If something doesn't look right or if important supports are missing, you have the right to ask for a review or appeal the decision. Don't feel like you have to accept a plan that doesn't meet your needs.

Remember: You're the Expert

Nobody knows your disability and your life better than you do. Your lived experience matters. Trust yourself to speak up about what you need, and don't let anyone make you feel like your needs aren't valid.

Your NDIS plan should work for your life, not the other way around. With good preparation and clear communication, your plan review can be a positive step toward getting the supports that help you live the life you want.
