World Down Syndrome Day: Celebrating Inclusion, Choice and Opportunity
Celebrating Inclusion, Choice and Opportunity
Every year on 21 March, World Down Syndrome Day provides an opportunity to celebrate people with Down syndrome, recognise their contributions and encourage greater inclusion across our communities.
For JRNY, inclusion is about more than awareness. It means creating environments where people are respected, listened to and supported to make choices about their own lives.
People with Down syndrome have their own personalities, interests, strengths, preferences and goals. The right disability support should recognise the person first and respond to what matters to them.
Understanding Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. It can affect development and may mean a person requires different levels of support throughout their life.
However, a diagnosis does not define someone's abilities, ambitions or potential.
Every person experiences life differently. Some people may need support with everyday routines, communication or accessing the community, while others may require assistance in different areas.
This is why person-centred disability support is so important.
Support Should Start With the Person
Good disability support is not about taking control of someone's life. It is about understanding what the participant wants to achieve and providing the right level of assistance to help them work towards those goals.
At JRNY, we believe participants should be actively involved in decisions about their support.
That can mean taking the time to understand someone's preferred routines, communication style, interests and goals before deciding how support should be delivered.
Sometimes progress looks like learning a new everyday skill. Sometimes it is attending a community activity independently. Other times, it may simply be feeling more comfortable trying something new.
What matters is that the goal is meaningful to the individual.
Creating More Opportunities for Participation
Being part of the community can play an important role in building confidence, relationships and independence.
Community participation may involve visiting local places, joining recreational activities, attending appointments, learning new skills or simply spending time doing something the participant enjoys.
For a person with Down syndrome, the right support can help remove practical barriers while still encouraging choice and independence.
JRNY provides support that can help participants take part in everyday activities at a pace that works for them.
Our services include:
- Social and Community Participation
- In Home Support
- Transport and Travel Assistance
- Support Coordination
- Specialist Disability Accommodation support
Each person's support requirements are different, which is why services should be shaped around individual needs rather than expecting participants to fit into a standard approach.
Building Confidence Through Everyday Experiences
Confidence often grows through small, consistent experiences.
Preparing a meal, using public transport, joining a social activity, making decisions about the day or practising an everyday task can all create opportunities for learning and independence.
Support workers can play an important role by providing encouragement without unnecessarily taking over.
The goal is to support the participant to be involved wherever possible.
Over time, these everyday moments can help people develop skills, make choices with greater confidence and feel more connected to their community.
The Importance of Choice and Control
Choice and control are central to person-centred NDIS support.
Participants should have a voice in decisions about the support they receive, the activities they participate in and the goals they want to pursue.
For families and carers, finding a provider that genuinely listens can make a meaningful difference.
At JRNY, we focus on building respectful relationships with participants and the people important to them. This helps us better understand how each individual prefers to be supported and what they want their journey to look like.
Inclusion Is Something We Practise Every Day
World Down Syndrome Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness, but meaningful inclusion should continue throughout the year.
It happens when people with disability are welcomed into workplaces, schools, neighbourhoods and community activities.
It happens when people are spoken to directly, given genuine choices and included in decisions affecting their lives.
And it happens when support focuses on strengths and possibilities rather than assumptions about disability.
At JRNY, we are proud to support people to participate, connect and work towards greater independence in ways that are meaningful to them.
Because every person deserves the opportunity to be heard, included and supported to pursue the life they choose.
Every person. Every possibility. Every JRNY.
